Who is KupKatie?
Hello there, a little bit about me…
I was born in Lubbock, Texas at Reese Air Force Base, moved to Blytheville, Arkansas when I was 2 years old, then we headed back to Blaine Tennessee where my mom and dad grew up. We then moved to Maryville when I was 7 years old where my two little sisters and I attended Porter Elementary School and then I graduated from Heritage High School in 2002.
My Husband and I got married in 2005 and proudly live here in Maryville. We have two boys that keep us busy when we are not making sweet treats and running the bakery. Our family runs on cake, baseball, football and Church…you will most likely find us at one or all everyday! My favorite is being Aunt Katie to my 3 nephews and sweet little niece and of course I love being the best bossy older sister to Allison and Abbie!:)
*Now how in the world did I decide to open a bakery??
Glad you asked….In 2010 my youngest sister Abbie and I began baking out of my home and very quickly we out grew the space from so many orders, plus Tony told us we were making too much of a mess in our small kitchen…he was our clean up crew! So we began looking for a space and with much prayer and determination we soon had an official KupKatie’s KupKakes location, on the day we had the keys placed in our hands, the doors opened and our very first customer asked if we made desserts…my dad told her “of course they do”, even though we didn’t have anything moved into the store, I mean we just received the keys to the place….so that night I had to go home one last time and make the order and we have been baking like crazy ever since! 🙂
*The most asked question is..”where did I go to school to learn to bake and decorate cakes”……
Well I didn’t, I have watched my Mom and Grandma decorate cakes for as long as I can remember. I could bake a cake before I could ride a bicycle, but I had never decorated one. So when customers kept asking for cakes, my mom told me to take the orders and she would help me…well by help me she meant “sink or swim”, in the nicest motherly way, of course, so I had to learn real fast how to decorate. So by trial and error, channeling my inner mom and grandma cake skills, and decorating all the cakes for family events I possibly could…I finally started decorating all kinds of cakes for all kinds of events. We pride ourselves with not just pretty cakes but great tasting cakes, so you will not find a fondant covered cake around here. I can do all kinds of decorations, themes, colors and designs with our, very own made right here in the store everyday, buttercream and we will use fondant as decorations but we will not cover our cakes in it.
*Who does the baking?…
TONY, he is the “master baker”. His kupkakes and cakes turn out baked to perfection, we think he talks to them and gives them pep talks as he bakes!! We also have and have had some amazing employees that are pretty awesome bakers. And if you have had one of our OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD BROWNIES, you can thank Tony for those..he is our in-house brownie guru, and of course our brownies are iced with Grandma McKinney’s Fudge Icing recipe to make them even better.
Well now that you know a little bit more about our family and what goes on around here, we look forward to seeing you and your family!
